Warriors on the Hunt for Hidden Gems in the 2021 NBA Draft

While everyone is extremely excited for the (potentially) two lottery picks heading to Golden State, let's not forget about the studs that Bob Myers and the rest of the front office have found late in the draft. Draymond Green with the 35th pick in 2012 and Eric Paschall with the 41st pick in 2019 are absolute finds.

I’m not going to speculate on the first-rounders that I want to be rollin’ with the Dubs until I know exactly where we are picking at the NBA Draft Lottery on June 22nd. While I wait, let's take a look at some low-key dudes the Warriors should be thinking about picking up in the second round or possibly as undrafted free agents.

Eugene Omoruyi

You can never have too many versions of Draymond Green. Eugene can do whatever is asked from him on both sides of the floor. He’s a physical forward that will attack the rim and use his solid jump shot. On defense, his size and quickness allows him to guard multiple positions as well as grab a lot of boards. He has turned into a more reliable three-point shooter during his tenure at Oregon. Omoruyi can be an effective rotation player in the league.

Derrick Alston Jr.

Derrick brings a lot of length to the wing position. He has pretty good movement and ball skills with his slim 6’11” body frame. Alston is definitely capable of hitting multiple deep shots in a game but he needs to be more consistent from the outside. If you remember, The Warriors drafted his former teammate in Boise, Justinian Jessup. Just something to think about.

McKinley Wright IV

A PAC-12 legend. McKinley showed off his leadership and playmaking abilities at Colorado. He can most definitely take control of a 2nd unit very soon down the road. His size at 6 foot might have some NBA scouts staying away from him but he makes up for it with his aggressive playing style. He’s a tough, gritty dude.

Jericho Sims

I’ve been saying this for a while. The Dubs have been lacking size and Jericho definitely brings that to the table along with his heavy defensive mindset. The Warriors weren’t a good rebounding team and lacked rim protection. Sims excels at both of those but could use work on his offensive game. If he turns out anything like the past Texas big men that have gotten drafted recently, he’d be a keeper.

Filip Petrusev

I may be a bit biased as a Gonzaga alum but Filip is a scoring machine. He got a taste of the pros over in Serbia after his two years in Spokane and actually seemed to add more to his offensive game. He is an amazing low-post scorer with quick footwork and has the ability to hit the jumper in a defender’s face. Over in Europe, he has been able to transition into a stretch 5 which has been fantastic to see. This growth from the college game to the European game tells me that he will continue to improve as he moves onto the NBA.

Marcus Zegarowski

I love this kid. Marcus was a ton of fun to watch in the NCAA Tournament due to his amazing ability to put up points. He spaces out the floor well as he can shoot the three, attack off the dribble, and be a playmaker for others. He lacks the defensive intensity to guard at the next level right now but that’s something that can be taught with the right coaching staff. Don’t sleep on Zegarowski from Creighton.
