Steph Curry Gives Update on Ankle
Last night against the Grizzlies, Warriors fans and team members had a scary flashback moment where it looked like Stephen Curry may have tweaked his ankle. While this is obviously not something anyone wants to see out of a star player, it draws some uniquely-concerned grimaces when you hear that it’s Curry who may be having the issues.
Before he was a 2-time MVP and 3-time champion, Curry was an all-star point guard who was widely considered on the wrong end of his career at a young age because of nagging ankle problems. It became such an issue that former Warriors head coach Mark Jackson even tried a religious method to curing his ailment.
It’s been awhile since we’ve seen ankle issues out of Curry, but given how much they seemed to cap his potential when he first started to put the league on notice, it’s not something fans, coaches, players, and others around the Warriors organization exactly like to see. Thankfully, Curry was able to reassure concerned parties that it was all good in the postgame presser:
“First one I had all year. It’s reminding me it’s still there” Curry said when asked about the tweak, per The Athletic’s Anthony Slater. “But it’s strong. Bounced back. Able to play the rest of the game. Don’t feel anything. So I’m not worried about it at all.”
While Steph’s still had to deal with some injury issues, thankfully there doesn’t seem to be any chronic or reoccurring ones that may throw people’s thoughts back to before 2014. Ever since Steve Kerr’s integration of the motion offense, it seems like Curry and his trainers have made it a priority to ensure those injuries do not linger through strengthening regimes.
Curry reportedly entered training camp at around 190-195 pounds this past season, adding a lot of muscle mass to his usually-smaller frame. He’s needed every bit of the strength he can get as he still does not quite get the respect he deserves from referees. Despite defenders like Dillon Brooks fouling him constantly on and off-ball, however, his training has toughened him up to be able to shake it off.
With seemingly no more looming concerns for Curry’s ankle ahead of the Christmas Day matchup against the Suns, it looks like Steph could be poised to finally break his Christmas game curse. Historically underperforming in these games, it’s encouraging to see that he’s ready to go at full strength, as he historically seems to not have been.
