Stephen Curry: Underrated To Premiere At Sundance Film Festival
This month, we’ll be getting a zeroed-in look at Stephen Curry’s rise to NBA stardom.
Director and Sundance veteran Peter Nicks will be debuting Stephen Curry: Underrated at the notorious film festival on January 23rd. The film discusses Curry’s career and NCAA Tournament run at Davidson College, commentating primarily on his success as an undersized point guard. The film will also include footage from the 2020-2021 NBA season, one of Steph’s most dominant despite it ending with a play-in loss to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Curry’s story is one of the more inspiring around the NBA, as he was not a heavily-recruited player coming out of high school. Davidson was his only Division I hoops offer despite him being the son of an NBA sniper, Dell Curry, and earning all-state honors in North Carolina as a player.
The film, produced also by big-time cinema director Ryan Coogler, captures the personal nuances behind Steph’s meteoric rise to NBA stardom. It also touches on his promise to his mother that he’d obtain his college degree despite leaving Davidson early for the NBA Draft, something he accomplished last year during the Warriors’ championship run.
It also plans to discuss some of his influence as arguably the most game-changing basketball player in NBA history, someone who set the game on fire and ushered in a revolution in how it’s played. It’s indisputable that the heightening of the league’s skill ceiling can be largely attributed to Curry, something which we’ll see more in-depth with Nicks’ documentary.
Expected to be one of the highlights of Sundance for sports fans, Underrated is not currently listed in a competition category. Instead, it’s considered a “special screening”, alongside a showing of a featured film from the 2021 edition of the film festival, the award-winning Summer of Soul. It will premiere first on January 23rd at 8pm, and will have a second screening the following day (January 24th) at 5:30pm.
