Stephen Curry Launches "Underrated" Golf Tour
After what has been a successful run of helping three-star youth basketball players achieve their goals of playing college basketball, Curry has branched the “Underrated” tour out to the golf course. The golf tour is looking to provide a similar path as the basketball tour for young athletes– a chance to prove their talent to the world.
More importantly, a greater goal of the Underrated Golf tour is to bring together these athletes from underprivileged communities and create a diverse environment in and around the golf course. It’s all about opportunity for the next generation of athletes, and as Steph is infamously known for being an underrated recruit during his teenage days, he understands the importance of opportunities.
Just as he was given the opportunity at Davidson by Coach Bob McKillop, you can say that Steph is the Bob McKillop for these up and coming players by providing and expanding his underrated tour.
In an interview with Draymond Green on “The Draymond Green Show”, Steph talked more about what type of opportunites golf can actually bring to players.
“There’s an understanding of the kind of opportunity the game can provide not just as in pursuit of playing the game professionally and making money,” Curry said. “But the world of golf, and the business of golf, and even just the different connections and doors that golf opens. We need more representation, more equity, access, and opportunity to the game.”
Many people probably tend to ask, just as Draymond did in his show– how do you find a three-star golf recruit? Steph in the podcast explained exactly how.
“Anybody who is a minority in golf; you’re already a three star recruit because there are so many different barriers to pursuing golf at the highest level,” Curry said. “But the three-star in golf is more the equity in terms of reaching the same amount of boys as girls as we do in each of the different tour stops that we have. The access in terms of breaking down those barriers whether it’s cost related, whether it’s transportation related, it’s equipment related, coaching– all of those things that are apart of skill development within golf.”
And just as his basketball tour is geared towards more than just the game of basketball on the court and helps parents and players understand the recruiting side of it all, the golf tour is also teaching these kids about what happens off the course.
“Golf will also be the vehicle to give these kids an understanding of skill development, business acumen, and an understanding of whatever passion that you have in this world, it’s possible for you to get into these right industries and do it where you’re prepared to become our future leader,” Curry said. “That’s the goal.”
The Underrated Golf Tour is set to hit four cities around the country including Chicago, Phoenix, Houston, and Tampa before hitting the final stage in San Francisco. From the first four cities, 24 boys and 24 girls will be selected to come to San Francisco to compete for the “Curry Cup”, which is the championship round of the tour.
