We Believe 2.0 or the Start of A New Age for This Franchise?
The anniversary of Baron Davis dunking on AK-47 in the 2007 Western Conference Semifinals has just passed and it got fans thinking. Is this year’s squad the second coming of that special team? I see how you can compare the two.
Both teams weren’t supposed to be anywhere near the playoffs. That 2006-2007 squad was a band of misfits led by Baron Davis, Monta Ellis, and Jason Richardson. No one had those Warriors finishing in the top 8 in the stacked Western Conference. Not only did they prove everyone wrong, they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in a playoff series against Dirk Nowitzki and the Dallas Mavericks. Those Dubs shocked the world.
You can say that Stephen Curry is carrying this year’s team to the promise land that is the always exciting NBA Playoffs. Klay Thompson tore his right achilles tendon before the season even started, James Wiseman went down about halfway through the season with a torn right meniscus injury, Marquese Chriss was announced to be out for the year after Christmas with a right syndesmosis ankle injury and a fractured fibula. The Warriors are still standing and have a real shot of upsetting a higher seed in the first round.
What’s even crazier about all this late success for the Warriors is the fact they’re dealing with even more injuries/sickness to Kelly Oubre, Eric Paschall, and Damion Lee. How the Warriors are still standing at this moment during the late stretch of the regular season and are right in the playoff hunt is unbelievable.
On the other hand, Draymond Green doesn’t want to hear any comparisons to that historic team.
"No disrespect to them at all because what they did was incredible. But we not no “We Believe 2.0”. We got f-----g Steph Curry on our team."
Could this team be the start of something new? The start of a new dynasty A.K.D. (After Kevin Durant)?
Regardless of what you think, both teams have proved to be monumental parts of this franchise’s history. But can this 2020-2021 group finish the job and pull off another improbable run?
