Golden State Bounces Back With 23-Point Win Over Atlanta

After a sloppy performance in Los Angeles on Monday night, the Warriors cleaned up some of the mistakes that plagued them to get back into the win column, with a 120-97 victory over the Atlanta Hawks. A wire-to-wire win had the Warriors up by as many as 31 points on Wednesday night.

The Warriors came out of the gates hot in the opening frame, fueled by a 24-2 run midway through the frame. Shooting guard Buddy Hield tallied eight of his 11 points in the first, starting a perfect 3/3 from the field.

Stephen Curry gave the home fans a highlight reel bucket in the final minutes of the first, throwing up a circus shot after falling to the ground being fouled by Onyeka Okongwu. Converting at the line for the three-point play.

The Warriors scored their most first-quarter points all season, ending the quarter 41-22 heading into the second with a 19-point lead. Shooting 60% as a team.

The lead expanded at the end of the second quarter with the Dubs continuing their dominant display on both ends. On Jonathan Kuminga's bobblehead night, Kuminga provided a steady offensive effort with 10 points to go along with 6 boards. Going into halftime on a 10-0 run to extend the lead to 67-42.

Tonight marked the third straight game Kuminga had played less than 20 minutes.

“I just read the game, and every game is going to be different,” head coach Steve Kerr said. “We’ve got a very deep team and we’re committed to 12 guys, we find groups, and JK will be a part of a lot of them.”

Throughout the night, the effort looked rather lackadaisical, Atlanta looked flat all night long and could not get it going from the field or their all-star Trae Young with just 12 points. The Hawks shot 26% from beyond the arc and just 33% from the field.

Atlanta managed to get the lead down to as low as 13 points, at the start of the fourth quarter though it did not ever feel the Hawks were ever truly surging towards any triumphant comeback. It more so felt like Golden State going through the motions and allowing Atlanta to slowly ease back into the contest.

In response to the Hawks getting it to 13 points, Lindy Waters III responded immediately with a triple to bring things back to a healthy 16-point lead.

It was a collective team effort for Golden State to pick up their eleventh win of the season. Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with a double-double, 14 points, and 11 rebounds. Curry poured in 23 points and eight assists, with four made threes.

Andrew Wiggins finished as the night’s leading scorer with 27 points on 12-17 shooting with seven rebounds. Wiggins has proven to be key to the Warriors' success as no one has truly carved a spot as a true number two scoring threat thus far during the 11-3 start.

On the day the Warriors got news of De’Anthony Melton requiring season-ending ACL surgery, Brandin Podziemski went down as well after an elbow to the face by Hawks center Clint Capela. Podziemski suffered a broken nose during the preseason and was forced to wear a mask to begin the season.

“The amount of pressure that he puts on himself with each shot is insane,” Draymond Green said on Podz’s early season struggles. “Stop reacting to everything that goes wrong for you…you know why? Because what we care about is all of the other things that you do.”

The Warriors finished the game with 15 turnovers, four less than on Monday, but not where they wanted to be. As a team, they finished 66.7% from the free throw line which was also an improvement.

The Dubs get set for a short two-game trip to battle a couple of Southwest opponents, starting with a matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night as part of the Emirates NBA Cup.
