Jonathan Kuminga is Making the Leap
The Warriors put up their second-highest total points on the season last night against the Mavericks, running up to 130 for a near-40 point win. The Dubs had 7 players in double figures and got excellent all-around performances from both Klay Thompson and Steph Curry, but probably the highlight player of the night was none other than Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga put up 22 points and 5 rebounds, shooting 8-for-9 from the field including a remarkable 4-for-4 from three point range. He got to the line twice, and had some excellent defensive plays. The capstone of his night, however, came when he put Josh Green all the way into the rim on the fast break:
First off, we just have to say how absurdly athletic this guy is. He gets his head at the rim after jumping off essentially a pivot turn. This guy is gonna be really, really good and has a massively high ceiling.
Kuminga’s shown some growth in his last stretch. He had a lot of high-usage games where he was turnover-prone, but last night he only coughed the ball up once. In fact, he’s averaging one turnover per game in the last 10 games, alongside 12ppg and just under 5rpg.
JoKu, despite not seeing consistent minutes since his start in which he posted his first career double-double, has been consistent with what he’s done in those minutes. He’s getting closer to 20 minutes a game, and should start to see some more time in the rotation. Because of how scattered his playing time is and the lineups he usually runs with, his +/- isn’t always the best, but he’s shown a lot of improvement.
With any luck, Kuminga should get rotation minutes in in the later spring and even the playoffs. He’s proven he’s ready to step up against big teams and play big minutes. The first step, however, is Kerr getting him more time in the rotation.
