Stephen Curry agrees to four-year, $215M extension with Warriors
The news broke on Tuesday morning that Golden State Superstar Stephen Curry has agreed to a four-year, $215M contract extension with the Warriors. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN tweeted the scoop to his nearly five million Twitter followers just before noon.
The historic deal makes Curry the first ever player to ink two separate $200M-plus contracts as Woj noted.
The two-time MVP and only undisputed MVP in history is set to make a whopping $261M over the next five years as his new contract will be extended off of the upcoming 2021-2022 season. Curry is locked in with Golden State until the 2025-2026 season when future Hall of Famer will be 38 by the completion of the season. This contract potentially sets Curry up with the option to remain a Warrior for the entirety of this career. This would put him in the very rare company of other greats that were able to have tremendous success with only one team for the span of their career à la Dirk Nowitzki and Kobe Bryant.
Aside from locking up one of the greatest players to ever lace ‘em up, the Warriors are now also able to use Curry’s extension as another tool to lure free agents to join Golden State.
The Warriors already signed Otto Porter Jr. and Namanja Bjelica to veteran minimum deals. Now they set their sights on using their taxpayer mid level exception to possibly round out their roster. The Warriors are hoping the Curry extension will help them in that pursuit.
