Kendrick Perkins puts some respect on Moses Moody's name after blunder

A talented basketball player works for years and years honing their craft. Thousands of hours spent on a basketball court, not to mention the weight room, watching film, on the road traveling to games, and the mental toll it can take. All with the ultimate goal of one day hearing NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, call their names in a room full of other talented athletes.

Well, for Moses Moody, that’s exactly what happened, with a little caveat. Kendrick Perkins happened to be commentating on the draft for ESPN when Moody’s name was called and what happened next is almost unexplainable. Once the small forward’s name was called, as the No. 14 pick in the draft, Perkins made not three, four, or five attempts at pronouncing Moses Moody’s name correctly but it took him somewhere in the ballpark of six to seven attempts before one of his associates had to chime in and help him. Needless to say, the clip went viral.

It sort of turned what is normally a beautiful moment for a player and his family into, well, sort of a joke.

The 19-year-old rookie, however, didn’t let it phase him one bit. He’s since gone on to play excellent basketball during the NBA’s Las Vegas Summer League scoring 17 points a game while shooting at a 40 percent clip from deep range.

Perkins and Rachel Nichols would later invite Moody to appear as a guest on ESPN’s The Jump show where Big Perk addressed the rookie on the situation in an attempt at explaining himself.

“I was trying to tell the world how great of a player you were, I’ve watched you throughout college and I kept saying with every pick that was going on after the fifth pick I was saying you know what they need to take Moses Moody…and when you finally got your name called at that one moment, I couldn’t…you know, that’s neither here nor there…at the end of the day you were going to make yourself into a household name anyway because obviously how talented you are on the basketball court…but now you a household name, everybody know who Moses Moody is now, even my grandma.”

A few days later, the former NBA player turned TV analyst took to Twitter to offer some respect directed towards Moody. To which Moody replied, “Preciate it OG 🤙”.

It’s all water under the bridge now, especially after Perkins made sure to go out of his way to put some respect on Moody’s name, rightfully so. At the same time it’s tough to place any blame on Perkins as it was an honest gaffe.

Now with this, hopefully, behind us we can all focus and enjoy what’s important, which is Moses Moody draining that corner three at a high percentage come this season.
