Warriors Come Back to Beat Defending Champs in LA
The Lakers led the Warriors for the first 45 minutes on Monday.
But the only score that matters is when the clock reads all zeros.
The Golden State Warriors (7-6) defeated the Los Angeles Lakers (11-4) 115-113 at Staples Center behind a 32-16 closing run, forcing a missed LeBron James 3-pointer as time expired to seal the victory.
As Golden State led 112-110 with 1:07 remaining, Stephen Curry got Anthony Davis on a switch, hit “the Brow” with a between-the-legs dribble before going behind the back and draining what would be a game-sealing triple from well beyond the three-point line.
After trailing the Lakers 64-48 at halftime, the Warriors rode three Andrew Wiggins triples to a 17-2 run, trimming the deficit to 70-68 with 6:32 in the third. Golden State would trail again by as many as 14 points before a Draymond Green layup with 2:40 remaining in the fourth quarter gave his team the lead for good.
Shortly after the ball was tipped, however, it looked like the Warriors were in for a walloping.
Dennis Schroder outscored Golden State for much of the first quarter, ending the period with 14 points and finishing the contest with a team-high 25 points. Curry opened the game 0-4 from distance before making his first triple as the opening quarter’s buzzer sounded, and Los Angeles led 34-22 through one period.
The Warriors responded in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to as few as five points on a run spearheaded by nine second-quarter points from Eric Paschall, who finished the game with 19 points on 8-11 from the field. After Paschall was lifted from the game, the Lakers finished the half on a 15-6 run to give them a double-digit lead midway through the contest.
Amid a rocky debut season for Golden State, Kelly Oubre chipped in 23 points on an efficient 50% from the field, finishing second in scoring to Curry, who led all players with 26 points.
As neither of Los Angeles’ usual suspects – James and Davis – reached 20 points on the evening, the bench stepped up for Frank Vogel’s squad.
Reigning NBA Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell scored 17 points on 7-8 from the field, and Kyle Kuzma added in 15 points with three 3-pointers.
In the frontcourt for the Warriors, rookie center James Wiseman got the start but played just 13 minutes due to foul trouble. Wiseman picked up his fifth foul with 9:37 remaining in the third quarter, leading the rookie to strike a Gatorade cooler on the bench out of frustration.
Curry – despite leading the game in scoring and hitting the decisive triple in the fourth quarter – continued to struggle from distance, going 3-12 from beyond the arc and making him 12-41 from three over the last four games.
The 19-point come-from-behind victory for the Warriors came after a 22-point comeback against the other Los Angeles team, the Clippers, on Jan 8. The blown lead was the largest for the Lakers in a game James has played in.
Golden State heads back to the Chase Center after a two-game roadtrip – the Warriors were scheduled to play the Suns in Phoenix on Friday, but the matchup was postponed “in accordance with the NBA’s Health and Safety Protocols.”
A two-game homestand for Golden State begins Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Steve Kerr’s squad welcomes the San Antonio Spurs (8-6) to San Francisco.
