An Update on Stephen Curry’s Offseason Training

The Warriors have returned to practice with a minicamp, and although Stephen Curry is not participating, the news surrounding his own workout regimen appears to be positive.

Curry missed most of the shortened 2019-2020 season, appearing in just five of the team’s 65 games due to a broken bone in his left hand. Golden State’s poor record in his absence meant that he didn’t need to rush back for a playoff push, and as the offseason continues to get longer for the Warriors, Curry has even more time to make sure he is in the best physical condition possible while also working on his game.

Everything on that front appears to be headed in the right direction, with multiple people close to Curry reporting that he is in great shape and getting help from a variety of trainers.

“Because we had so much downtime due to the hand injury, we were able to really jump right into things, a little bit more so than we would in a normal offseason,” said Curry’s personal trainer Brandon Payne during a September 25 appearance on Tom Haberstroh’s podcast, The Habershow. “This year, it’s been much more of a collaborative effort with myself and the Warriors’ strength and conditioning staff.”

Payne made clear that even as Curry recovers from a difficult injury, he remains in a good place in all aspects of his life.

“He just never really gets out of shape,” Payne said. “He looks really good. Really confident, really strong, and I’m really pleased with where he is. He’s also in a good place mentally. He’s had enough time with the kids, with the family and he’s able to balance things out.”

In the part of the interview that will probably excite Warriors fans the most, Payne suggested that the best could be yet to come for the star guard.

“He's still gaining strength, power, and getting faster,” Payne said. “He's even more chiseled … he's a young 32.”

Payne was not the only figure from the basketball side of Curry’s life to speak on his training. Although he’s mainly focused on running the minicamp right now, Steve Kerr took some time to provide an update of his own on Curry’s work.

Although he’s not participating in the team practices, Curry has made his way to Warriors facilities on a few occasions and impressed his coach with his work.

“I just saw Steph a few weeks ago, maybe two weeks before this camp started,” Kerr said. “he was coming into our building quite a bit and getting plenty of work in and he looked in amazing shape. It's not at all surprising.”

When discussing the upcoming season for Curry, Kerr largely echoed Payne’s sentiment of tremendous, and perhaps the slightest bit cautious, optimism.

“I have no doubt that he's working his tail off and he's going to have a phenomenal season for us,” Kerr said. “There's little doubt in my mind because I've seen the conditioning and the work that he's put in, and he looks better than ever.”

When Curry suffered his injury roughly 11 months ago (and what feels like years ago at this point), it was clearly a devastating blow for Golden State’s season. But now, in the context of the long-term outlook for the team, along with all the crazy things that have happened since, the injury actually brought a lot of positives. It allowed Curry to reset after five straight grueling playoff runs while focusing on his health and conditioning. And if his coach and personal trainer are to be believed, he’s been pretty successful in doing so.
